How much time are you going to give for your country in 2013

by viggy — Categories: UncategorizedLeave a comment

Since there are only 20 days left in 2012, I think a website which will ask for volunteer hours from people across the nation and then keep a database of the same will be good. After that the same data can be sent to different NGO’s who are looking for volunteer time and they can contact the person and ask him to devote it for a particular job. Based on the volunteers interest, he can either do it or reject it. However by this effort, we can just get a good idea of how many people want to volunteer and it can inspire more people to volunteer also.

Find your kith/kin

by viggy — Categories: UncategorizedLeave a comment

I was going through facebook and I saw that one of my friend had shared about a missing person and was asking her friends to share and help find the person. That is when I thought how with the current technology and smartphone it is so easy to circulate information about such incident so soon. In most of the cases, people/kids who are lost are either suffering from old age/ mental illness and hence not able to think very clearly or it can be kids who just dont know what they are doing and wander away from their guardians. In both these cases, if the information about such incident can be spread to various people in that area very quickly, may be someone can actually have noticed the person and hence able to share information about their location or atleast give more updated information.

Hence, there is a scope for a website and an android app where you can quickly upload/post the photo of the person lost and if not photo, atleast some concrete information about the person and that information should be sent to various people based on their last reported location so that they can help in finding the person immediately. One more usage of such a app can be comb areas across the city to help find people who have been lost for say few days. May be there can be a group of volunteers who just roam around their home/office area with the image of the person lost in their city and try to report if they can get some information about the person or just update that the missing person was not possibly in so and so area. This way, atleast police and the relatives of the missing person can have better idea of where the missing person is.

Ofcourse may be chances of able to find a missing person through this might be very bleak especially if the person has been missing for more than few days but atleast even few missing people are found through this, then it will be fruitful.

Ofcourse one more way of extending this application is for police to post wanted people’s photo so that people who notice such person can report to the police. The website can also act as a shield to protect the identity of the person who has revealed the location of the wanted criminal.

Idol worshippers

by viggy — Categories: Uncategorized — Tags: , , , , , , 2 Comments

Aseem trivedi, a cartoonist and an active supporter of India Against Corruption group was arrested day before yesterday for sedition for cartoons he put up in his website, cartoonsagainstcorruption.blogspot.in. The cartoons try to mock various symbols of Indian democracy.
Indians in general are very popular idol worshippers. With such a long history, the values represented in our religions have taken different shapes and symbols. It can be images of piligrimage places or different religious symbols or miniature idols itself, Indians tend to worship everything. However, in due course, we have conveniantely forgotten what those symbols or idols represent.
Arrest of Aseem Trivedi is also an example of how Indians are now worshipping the idols of democracy and not the values of democracy.
The parliament did not function for the whole of monsoon season with ruling and opposition parties not able to reach any consensus on the issue of debate in the parliament regarding various allegation of corruption on the Prime Minister in the allocation of coal blocks. Each passing day of the current government brings light to some new scandal or case of corruption by its ministers and still instead of cleaning the parliament of these corrupt politicians, we are trying to take action against those who are just trying to bring these issues of corruption into limelight.
On Dec 13th 2001, this very insitution and symbol of Indian democracy was attacked by terroriost groups and these politicians are still playing politics in name of religion instead of punishing those responsible. But no one seems to question this mockery.
The previous office bearer of First citizen Of India was alleged to have spent crores on foriegn trips with her family and still no one questioned this mockery of the post of First Citizen Of India.
I hope, we start respecting the values represented by these idols instead of the idols itself.

You are richer than me if you can give more than me

by viggy — Categories: Uncategorized — Tags: , , Leave a comment

I have always had this debate with my mom where in she always says that we are not yet rich and hence we should save money and not spend it luxuriously. However in my current position, I have always felt very rich. Even though, in my college days, I used to think that the person who has money in bank account was rich and I always used to dread it when my account didnt have atleast a 5 number figure. My dad did ensure that there was always a 5 digit number in it even though I was spending the money lavishly.

However, I have come to realize now that it is not how much money you have in your account that can make you rich. You can have 6-7 digit numbers in there but then whats the use if you cant give it. I see so many people driving cars luxuriously but then how can they be called rich if they cant stop and give a lift to someone. Once when I was running behind a bus and I just missed it, a person going in bike himself stopped and offered me to chase the bus to the next stop and drop me so that I can catch it there. I feel that guy is much richer than anybody who is going in a car without caring to look outside what is happening around.

When the time comes, if you can put the number of zeros more than me in a cheque which will be donated to an organization for a social cause, that is when I will consider you as richer than me. Cheque is just a symbol here. Even if you can give more time for social issues than me, I will consider you richer. I often find people who donate money to some ngo and then think that their work is done for the society. This is the reason why we see so many NGOs coming up just to get funding and do nothing on the ground. It is important that you also give time more than money to any social issue that touches and inspires you the most.

friends that you make during a journey

by viggy — Categories: experience, FSMK, social, Uncategorized — Tags: , Leave a comment

I keep meeting different new people as part of my activities at FSMK. Some of them are students whom I try to influence and some of them are staunch free software guys from whom I try to get influenced. However, I had always considered these people, especially those who are not students to be those who are all motivated by one aim which it to spread knowledge to different people and it is this aim that bonds us together. But apart from this, I had always considered each one of us to be different and having a separate personal life. So only thing that I had thought that bonded us was the common aim.
However with the sad demise of Rasineesh, I just realized that in this part of my life as volunteering for fsmk, I have just not met and worked with other volunteers but also have made very good friends who all share a common aim. Our paths that lead us have been very very different but now we all have to lead a path together supporting and complimenting each other. During this journey we will be parted from some and make new friends but over all, it is now a very integral part of our lives.
Infact if I think about it, I sometimes feel more natural with friends of fsmk then all my previous friends. May be it is this common aim that bonds us so strongly that makes me so comfortable with them.

How to derive the minimum number of clues or starting digits needed to complete a Sudoku uniquely

by viggy — Categories: UncategorizedLeave a comment

This has been a very difficult challenge to mathematicians and as per the recent article here, http://www.nature.com/news/mathematician-claims-breakthrough-in-sudoku-puzzle-1.9751 , they have proved by brute-force that it is 17. However as I understand, they have tried to come up with all the combinations to derive at this number which is not very efficient and very error prone.

While thinking on how to solve this problem, I realized that to prove that 17 is the number, I needed to represent Sudoku puzzle in linear algebraicĀ  equations with exactly 17 variables.

Technology to the rescue

by viggy — Categories: experience, Fun, social, Uncategorized — Tags: , , , , , 1 Comment

Nagaraj sir, who is an active member and holds some important position at Democratic Yoth Federation of India (DYFI), had asked me to come to his area with my laptop. Since Karnataka government had opened a portal, http://web1.kar.nic.in/rconline/ to apply for a ration card online, many cyber cafes had started charging hefty amount from poor people who were not able to apply for it themselves. Hence he wanted me to apply online for the people in his area. So at around 11:00, we set up a table outside his house. His neighbor had kindly agreed to give access to internet through his broadband and since he had a wireless router, it was easy for us to access it from where we were sitting.

Since I myself did not have a ration card and my mom had been pestering me for applying it online since last two months, I had applied for it last night and understood all the fields required to fill the form very well. Unfortunately in my case, it had not accepted my LPG gas connection number and due to this I had to say that I did not own a gas connection while applying for the ration card.

At around 11:30, few people started coming along with their electric bill. And I started applying for each one of them. I observed many interesting points.

Almost all these people had their own houses. This was not strange to me because I knew from my previous interaction at another slum that state government provides funds to people to build pakka cement houses. The agreement is that the family has to have its own land and they need to put the foundation themselves. The amount for the building the walls and roof will be given by the government. This was a good scheme because it ensured to some extent that the people do not misuse the money provided by the government.

In many cases, the R.R. No. of the electricity bill had already been used by someone else to apply for the ration card. Due to this the portal was not allowing anyone else to apply for a new cardĀ  for that particular electricity bill. In many cases, it turned out that the tenant of the house had applied for the ration card using the electricity bill due to which the owner themselves were not able to apply for a card.

By around 4:00, I had applied for 22 families. Since I was using Ubuntu, after completion of every application, I was able to store the complete application in a pdf format which Nagaraj sir had decided to give a hard copy to each applicants for their future use. Also the wonderful feature that the portal had was that after successful submission of the application, it was sending a sms to the applicant’s mobile number with an acknowledgement number.

In all, it was a great experience for me. I found a family where the husband was 5 years younger to his wife. We had to make sure that the birthday was actually correct. In another case, for one applicant there were 8 dependents and somehow while adding 5th dependent, the portal removed all the previously added dependents. At the end, we only applied for 4 dependents for the particular applicant.

Another interesting thing I saw was that most of the people were applying for a BPL(Below poverty line) card, which meant that they had to mention that their annual income was less than Rs. 36,000(I am not sure of this rule). However, only one person asked to mention his correct annual income saying that it wouldnt be right to mention less just for benefits.

There was another interesting applicant. She was a muslim lady who had come in Burkha. After waiting for around 30 mins and since she was way behind in queue, she asked me if I can apply for her next as there were all males in the queue now. I politely disagreed as all of them also had been waiting and few of them had already raised concerns that they had to go to work. Somehow she was not happy with this and before her turn came, she started pointing to my mistakes in other’s application forms and started talking in English to me. Also for her application, she had written all the details that was required and gave it to me. She felt proud to have done this and started bragging to her friend that since she had written it down and given to me, I shouldnt have any confusion in application process. However, I had failed to realize that she was actually applying with her husband’s name and hence I had by mistake marked it as a female applicant. So I had to go back to the initial webform and correct it. I felt that she was very angry that I had made such a silly mistake.

However, the biggest satisfaction that I got during the day was that how the technology had helped these people apply for the ration card without which they would have atleast had to spend their one full day going to the government office and standing in long queues and then running around with documents or in the best case, pay around Rs. 1000 to a broker to get it done for them. Infact I remember my cousin brother had paid around 2500 to an agent for both ration card and gas connection for his family. It was only because of my laziness that I had also not gone through an agent to apply for the ration card.

Also at around 4:00, since I had some other personal work, I decided to leave. However the neighbor who also about my age and who had been kind enough to allow us to use his internet connection had also started applying for others and this way I was satisfied that now the area will not need me to come again for applying as the neighbor would do it for them.

Nagaraj sir has already suggested another locality where we can go next time whenever I am free. I certainly feel very proud of having done a small contribution to so many families. Of course, we have only applied for the ration card for them and still the process of verification by the food officer remains and it is only after this that the families will get a ration card.

This experience also gave me lot of food for thought regarding the controversial project, UID. I will try to summarize those thoughts in a separate post soon.

So fake that have I lost my originality?

by viggy — Categories: UncategorizedLeave a comment

The concept presented in Inception is a very powerful one. A person changes his environment so many times that he forgets what his original environment was.
Now what if instead of his environment a person changes his character. An example would be a spy. A spy has to live with so many identities. How does he live his
off-duty life. Can he forget his fake identities and live his original identity. But again spy knows what his original identity is. He is very motivated towards
his original identity and hence very well knows the purpose and timeline of his fake identities.
What if a person is not so motivated towards his original identity. What if the change of identity is not a sudden change but a gradual change owing to circumstances.
Let me put my example. I had to frequently change my schooling environment owing to my dad’s transfers. As a person, I am very social and hence I need people
around me. This meant that I had to regularly adapt myself to the environment of the school to make new friends. With this, I did have many good friends in each school I studied.
But now, the question is did I change myself so much that I dont know what my original identity was. Also should I call my present character as fake as it
probably is no where near to my original identity.
If I look at it optimistically, I can say that my identity has not changed but only evolved and it is a necessary and compulsory step in every human’s life.
Similar to a diamond, which in a mine is black but when it changes its environment from a mine to a wedding ring, it has evolved so much that it changes from being
black to a nice, sparkling stone.
But I feel that is a bad example. Daimond always had that sparkling nature and it just required someone to cut it and shape it to show that sparkling nature.
