It is now or never

I always wanted to do something for him. Through out my life I had seen him sacrificing to keep me happy. These were small things but these were the things due to which I am whatever I am. Very often, there would be one apple and two of us. So to make me eat the full apple, he used to say that he did not like apple. Slowly, he started disliking more and more things for me. He also got too comfortable with his old clothes so that I could have new one. We were not poor but as most of the middle class families, we had limited budgets. I always used to think that when I grow up I will make up for it. After all I was a small boy at that time. What could I have done. I studied hard and got good marks and that was all I could do. Slowly I grew up to be a college boy but still I was small. I did not earn anything but I did spend a lot. We had grown from middle class to upper middle class, so I had the luxury. But I didnt observe the cut downs that he was making. He didnt buy a car so that he could sponsor my graduation.  Then the incident happened. He was diagnosed with a terminal illness. But somehow I had hope. After all he had been a good man through out his life, why would God punish him this way. If anyone had to be punished, it had to me for bullying him to agree my terms. But 2 years later, he passed away and I was left all alone with the huge burden of things I wanted to do for him. Now I dont know what to do with all the plans that I had made for him. I have money now but no one to enjoy it with. I make self sacrifice but that does not bring a smile on anybody’s face. I do not know how to reduce this burden. If only amongst so many things he disliked, I knew one thing he liked. But I never asked. It is now I realize that whatever you want to do for others, it is now or never.

Many of you must have heard about the farmer suicides. Almost everybody must have thought to do something for them. Probably as soon as you reach 40, each one of you want to be a politician or a social worker and change the policies in favour of the farmers. Or probably you are waiting to finish one last project that you are presently involved in. But please realize that it is NOW or NEVER. Inequality is the fastest growing sector in India and we need to arrest it as soon as possible. Farmer suicides have become so common that NEWS channels consider it as a information than a NEWS. Come join us to wake the people of India and save our farmer brothers. Please let us not have to carry the burden of things that we wanted to do for the farmers to our graves. Be there on 26th of March at TownHall at 5 pm. For more information, http://farmer-suicide-and-it.wikispaces.com

Different faces of money

by viggy — Categories: experience, Fun4 Comments

Had gone to Amoeba with 7 of my school friends whom I met after a long long time. There I played a car race which was Rs. 40 per person. The car race was just 2 laps and around for 5 mins and I hardly knew what I was doing. (I dont know how to drive a real car too). After that we went to Purple Haze. The ambience was great and though only 4 of us drank, we enjoyed the flavored hookha. The bill was Rs. 1629 which included 3 shots of tequila and two pitchers of Beer too. As I had just recently got a new job, everyone was expecting a treat from me but somehow I was not in mood. Hence even though I paid Rs. 500, most of my friends were unhappy. I agree, they had all the rights to be sad. Anyways after hearing friendly abuses from them for being a miser, they dropped me at Marthahalli bridge where I waited in bus stop to catch a bus. While waiting I decided to buy groundnuts just for time pass. There is a boy who sells it at the bus stop and he keeps hitting his metal spatula on the metal pan in which he fries the groundnuts. Since there was some time for the bus to come, I decided talking to the boy. He was hardly 10 years old. He told me that he was from U.P. and his parents are still there. He came to Bangalore so that he can earn for his sister to get married. The trolly was owned by someone else and the owner gives him daily a box of groundnuts which this boy has to sell from Rs. 100. In turn, this boy will get Rs. 1000 per month and a place to sleep and food to eat. If the boy does not make Rs. 100, then the remaining amount will be deducted from his salary. It made me wonder that the boy works just for Rs. 35 per day and I had just spent Rs. 500 in matter of few hours by which I couldnt even satisfy my friends and had spent Rs. 40 for just 5 mins for something which I did not even enjoy and this boy was spending his whole day just to earn Rs. 35. That is what made me think how this boy would react if I had given that Rs. 500 to him. The money was same but what it bought would have been so very different. Hopefully through the “Each One Teach One”, I will be able to make some difference in lives of atleast few of millions of such boys.

Viggy’s day OUT!!

by viggy — Categories: experience, Fun — Tags: , , , Leave a comment

Today I went out with Vivek and Sunny. The plan was that Vivek will bring his friend Sunny and I will bring Tushar with me and both will go to celebrate my joining of Intel and Vivek’s bday. However since I informed Tushar about this plan at the last moment, he was not able to make it. Hence only me, vivek and Sunny were left to enjoy the evening and BOY did we enjoy it.
First, I picked Vivek and Sunny from Jayadeva and then we went in Auto to MG Road. The plan was to go to Oxygen Pub. Vivek has heard a lot about it and even I had always wanted to a pub. So we went to MG road and roamed around a bit before entering Oxygen. I gave the Rs. 900 cover charge and when we entered there were two doors. One led to a lighted hall which had seats all around it and a lot of space in between. However old Hindi songs were being played. The next door led to a disc where Rock songs were being played but it was nearly empty. Only one or two table were occupied and they looked completely drunk. We asked a waiter if this was all as we were disappointed. We were expecting a disc full of couples dancing however we didn’t find any room remotely interesting. Waiter told us that one room was a disc and other was a Girls dance bar. Since the disc was completely empty we thought of trying out the girl’s dance bar. It was truly a dance bar and soon after we entered around 5 girls in Saree which was exposing their hip entered the room and they stood in front of us. They didn’t start dancing yet but they were shaking their hip and clearly trying to entice us. We were feeling very awkward and I was scared to death. I knew that a dance bar was banned in India and didn’t trust these guys to be doing it legally. Hence we all decided to grab a beer ( KF Strong was Rs. 300) to cover our cover charges and run from here soon. Soon people started to pour in the bar and some looked regular chatting with waiters on their way in. And music also changed to latest item songs. The girls had not yet started dancing as such but they were making more movements. One person among the audience took a bundle of Rs. 10 and gave it to waiter nearby. He started dropping it over the head of a girl who was dancing nearby. This made me more awkward. One that money was being dropped in such a way and two that the girls were dancing like that for the money. Soon around 3 more girls came and they also started dancing. Though most of the girls were around 25-30 years old, I noticed one who looked very young and was probably around 20-22 years old. She was beautiful and to see her in this way made me sad. We soon finished our beers and left. Since one of my friend wanted to drink more and it was just around 8, we decided to go to some other pub. As we had heard about Le Rock and we didnt want to try some other unknown pub, we decided to go to Le Rock. The cover charge there was Rs. 400. We were thinking that we wouldnt be able to drink enough to cover the cover charge. However we paid the cover charge and entered. The ambiance looked perfect for a pub and with Bose woofers near our seat, it made sure that we feel every beat of the song. We decided to order a Tower of beer but since it was not there, we ordered a Pitcher and 3 tequilas. However I refused to have a Tequila and Vivek drank mine. We completed one in no time and Vivek ordered one more. Meanwhile we went on with our photoshoot posing in different poses. I was not very with the service there as we had ordered a Potato basket along with our first pitcher and it was brought to us only after we refused to accept the second pitcher if the potato basket was not served soon. Potato basket was really good, especially with Potato’s cut in shape of round faces and some with cream inside them. By this time my head had already started spinning and I was feeling dizzy. This was the first time I had drank so much and even though I didnt have the Tequila shot but even beer was too much for me. I was trying to hold me as much as possible but clearly alcohol does impair your reaction time. In all we had three beer pitchers and the total bill was Rs. 2472. :). And I thought we wouldnt even make it to Rs. 1200. Anyways on our way back we had a fight with an AutoRickshaw driver. He was trying to cheat us by taking a longer route. We took another Auto and were safely back home. So that was my day out with Vivek and Sunny. Overall a wonderful evening with a great new experience of the dance bar. Dont know if I will want to go there again though.

P.S. Since this is the first time I am accepting publicly that I drink beer, if you are one of my relatives please keep it to yourselves. Others can wait to find it out. :)

Rajneeti-Impressed but could have been better

by viggy — Categories: experience, Fun — Tags: , , Leave a comment

After hearing mixed response from people about Rajneeti, I finally found some time to watch it. Though I hardly watch any hindi movies until I hear very good reviews about it, since this was about politics, I wanted to watch it. Strangely Politics and Underworld plots are the only movies that I like to watch in bollywood. Anyways so when I finally sat to watch the movie, I knew from the start that I had like it.
Overall I actually liked the plot. Story was very well written. The script had many instances taken from GODFATHER, like the one in which driver plants the bomb and runs away, keeping a dead body on the bed to threaten a person and also that a foreign returned son has to stay back as his father has been attacked . But many other instances were quite original and i liked it. Even those picked from GODFATHER were very well utilized and credit should be given to the script writer for that.
Characters for the film also was very well chosen and though there were big names in the movie, it was clearly not just to attract their fan followers. Ranbir again impressed me with his acting. Ajay and Nana have always done justice to such type of roles and this was nothing new for them. Among the characters, I was disappointed by the small role given to Naseeruddin Shah. He could definitely be utilized in a much better way. Also Nikhila Trikha, who played the role of Samar’s (Ranbir) mother did not do justice to her role. Especially,in the scene where she goes and talks to Suraj(Ajay Devgan), I could see nothing from her side in the scene. Though that scene had a very small significance in the overall story, but still that scene required much more from her. Why she was selected for the role still mystifies me but a explanation can be found here.

Throughout the story one point is very clear, Mango Man is a complete fool. With all the political drama happening around, Suraj, who was supposed to be representing the Mango Man clearly also becomes a politician and forgets his being a Mango Man. His roots being a Mango Man is again shown at the end where he does not join the side of Samar even when he is offered the highest seat. Also when Katrina comes forward and cries for the injustice done to her, Mango Man supports her and makes her win the election without realizing whether she is the right person for being a CM or whether she will be able to run the government for next 5 years. This is very much true in real life and I guess that is the main idea that Rajneeti wants to spread. Even though this is a democratic country, only members from the so called royal family are chosen as the right person for the royal seats. Also between the fight for seat in the royal family, it is the Mango Man who suffers but still supports the royal family. This can be clearly seen in Maharastra where the fight inside the Thackeray family is clearly the main reason for dividing Mumbai as a city for Maharastrians and not for Biharis.

FSMK weekend

by viggy — Categories: experience, Fun — Tags: , , Leave a comment

It has been one of the most useful weekends I have spent. Not only did I enjoy the weekend to its fullest, I could also make sure that it was fruitful. The weekend started right from Friday evening. I left office at around 7 and met Naveen and went with him to FSMK office. There while watching the opening match of IPL season 3, KKR vs DC, we planned the events for the weekend. We discussed for around 2 hours and divided the tasks among all the FSMK volunteers. We had planned few run-up events before the National Conference on Open Source which is going to be held on 20-21 March. Two of the main events that we had planned were a freedom walk of 2 groups of students on Garuda Mall and Jayanagar on Saturday and the release of “namma debian” and a photo gallery of Mani’s art in AC3 on Sunday.

So as decided during the meeting, early morning on Saturday, me and Naveen went to 3 different engineering colleges on Bannerghatta Road and met the concerned authorities over there and asked their permission to stick posters on the notice boards and also asked if during the weekend we could talk personally to students and get some on-the-spot registrations for the conference. Luckily we got positive response from all the 3 engineering colleges but unfortunately since all the colleges had holiday on Saturday we could not directly talk to students. However I am sure we will follow it up during this week. We finished visiting the colleges in the afternoon and then we geared up for the Freedom walk on Jayangar. We had decided to meet YDIT students at 4:00 at Jayangar 4th Block bus stand. So at around 4:30 we, around group of 10, started our Freedom Walk carrying the banner of National Conference and distributing pamphlet. We tried to explain to anyone who showed even little interest in discussing with us about the event. I am pretty sure we were able to distribute pamphlets to around 200 people and also explain to around 50-75 people personally and in detail about the conference. The group at Garuda Mall which was a much bigger group of around 35 students must have had a much more impact on people and must have really caught a lot of attention. The Freedom Walk stopped at around 7 after which I went back to my aunt’s house where in I again enjoyed a lot and celebrated the birthday of Meghna with other PG girls at midnight.

On Sunday, I met other FSMK volenteers at AC3 in the evening and we started preparing for the event. There was lot of excitement among the slum people. They helped us in all the ways they could in organizing the stage and cleaning up the venue. By around 5:30 we had around a group 75 people other than FSMK volenteers with atleast 30-40 children. The event started with a inspiring speech by G Ramakrishna, Editor of Hosatu. He told people how they could change their lives by working hard and giving education to their children instead of leaving everything for the fate to decide for them and complaining about all the problems in their life. After that, a small boy gave a wonderful speech about Mr. B.R. Ambedkar’s life and also how all the holy-books of different religions regards the gift of knowledge and education much higher than any other worldly gifts. He explained these facts by reciting specific examples from Bhagvad Gita and Kuraan. This was followed by the main event of the program which was the release of “Namma Debain” cd. It is a flavor of debian in Kannada language which we plan to distribute in villages throughout Karnataka so that people who are only literate in Kannada language can also use computers for their day-to-day life without any hassle. This was followed by a brief demo of the Namma Debian where in we tried to explain to the slum people how easy it was now for them to use computers now. This was followed by a display of different pictures made by Mani using the GIMP software. Then we had few cultural activities by the slum children. It was a great event and I was proud to be a part of it. I could see the impact that AC3 was having in the slum and this made us more determined to start such centers through out the city.

Online CAT may use open source code post glitch

15 Dec 2009, 1235 hrs IST, Peerzada Abrar, ET Bureau

BANGALORE: The leading IIMs, still smarting under the recent fiasco over the online CAT debut, are creating their own firewall against similar disasters in
future. After an elaborate post-mortem of the recent disaster, many IIM officials are exploring the idea of using free and open source software (Foss), rather than going in for proprietary software, to prevent online common admission test disasters in future.

“Online exams can be easily conducted using Foss as it can not only reduce costs by over 50%, but it is also safe against virus and malware attacks,” said one of the IIM officials. Infact, US-based Prometric — which bagged the high-profile $40-million contract to organise the online CAT using proprietary software like Microsoft Windows, along with NIIT — has pinned the main reason for this year’s disaster on the virus attacks.

Despite installing several security measures, they were unable to circumvent the virus attacks, which impacted over 20,000 candidates. Unlike the open source software, proprietary software is not for free and has to be bought.

Experts like T Vignesh Prabhu, a hacker at ‘deeprootlinux’, which is dedicated to developing and supporting Foss, said virus attacks form the major concern of IIMs. “The only solution is to discard the virus-prone operating system you have been using and install Foss, such as GNU (a free software) and Linux-based operating systems,” he said.

Foss software, which grants users the right to study, change, and improve its design through its source code, is the most preferred option. He said, there is enough statistics to prove that GNU/Linux-based operating systems are less prone to virus attacks. The only other way is to keep fighting the viruses by installing the latest updates of various anti-virus softwares.“And, you have to keep your fingers crossed hoping that developers of anti-virus companies are just as fast as the virus-writers,” he added.

Officials at Prometric, which had used proprietary software this time, said many centres were affected by mainly two viruses — Conflicker and W32.NIMDA. IIM officials said this happened despite the fire-walls systems installed. They said the CAT computers were sourced and leased from local colleges in the cities where the examinations were held. They said most of the CAT computers got infected through the servers and other computers in various colleges through the local area network (which is a computer network covering a small physical area like a group of buildings). Also, the existing data on some of the 17,000-20,000 CAT work stations has not been deleted.

IIM officials said many of these 17,000-20,000 computers were prone to virus attacks as they may not have used the genuine proprietary software.

“I doubt whether Prometric really checked this. Many colleges may have used pirated software,” said one of the IIM officials. The Foss model is already working successfully in states like Kerala, where the state government’s IT@School provides IT-enabled education to 1.6 million students a year in the state using Foss. “We will use Foss to handle over four lakh admission application forms in a period of 10-15 days for two lakh 11th standard seats in government and government-aided institutions,” said IT@ School executive director K Anvar Sadath. He said the CAT exam can be run successfully on Foss without any virus threats.

Despite all these advantages, some IIM officials also said it will be difficult to conduct exams like CAT on Foss as it is not user-friendly and there is very less awareness about it.

Meanwhile, top IIM officials said they are determined to continue to hold the CAT exam according to the online format, and not go back to traditional paper-pencil one. “Online tests take place globally on a large scale. IT-enabled education is the way ahead,” IIMB director Pankaj Chandra told ET on Wednesday. He said they are reviewing student grievances and are coming up with new guidelines to screen those who deserve to be given a retest to ensure that only genuine candidates enter IIMs.

IIM officials said they were reviewing thousands of hours of video recording of the entire CAT 2009 exam to screen such candidates. Infact, European Union is one of the biggest supporters of Foss at present, having shifted all its public administration details to the Foss format.

Japan aims to switch some of its government computers to the free Linux operating system and reduce its dependence on Microsoft Windows. Japan saw the use of Linux as a way of lowering procurement costs and bolstering its defence against cyber-attacks. Like Germany, France and other European countries, Japan, South Korea and China long have been wary of leaving too many government computers and networks dependent on Windows. Many experts view Windows as too prone to computer viruses and hacking.

my day, 3rd dec 2009

by viggy — Categories: experience, FunLeave a comment

got up at 11. went to bank and lodged complaints about my card transfer. while lodging complaint a guy shouts at the bank manager for causing him inconvinience for withdrawing money which was a pretty huge amount about 75k. then went to FOSS.IN and attended talk by debayan. It was a good one and at last I got to know properly what he was working on. Also got my hand on the OLPC laptop, which was very cute. Tried to use it for sometime. Interface was good and would like to get one of it myself someday but it seems that you just cannot buy one. Then went to the KDE Potd hoping to get a kde sweat shirt. Unfortunaetly couldnt get one. :(. Then left in middle of the daily keynote as I had to go to my old room and pay the monthly rent. Then had dinner with my old roomies. Then caught a bus to Shivajinagar to go back home. While reading the novel on the bus, one man apparently indian origin but a US returned( as I guess from his accent) advised me not to read novels while moving on bus as it harms the eyes. I asked him how else I could utilize my precious time while travelling. He couldnt suggest anything. However this has left me with thinking for an idea how to utilize thier time while travelling on bus. FM is not an answer as nowadays it is more crap than songs and it is not productive anyways. Now I am sitting in a cyber cafe. Came to apply in Cisco which I could only using IE 6 or 7. But the webpage is complete crap and it is hosted by merittrac. It does not even load in IE6 properly. Anyways I will have to try somewhere else I guess now. Now I think I will leave for my room. Hope to have fun tomorrow at FOSS.IN.
