My mail to TRAI about NetNeutrality

by viggy — Categories: discussion, FSMK, internet — Tags: , , 1 Comment
Following is the content of that mail that I sent to TRAI(advqos@trai.gov.in) with my views on NetNeutrality.
I would encourage people to copy/paste and send the same content or improvise it and send it to TRAI and express their support for NetNeutrality.
Hi,

Last two-three decades have shown us the power of people communicating
to each other independently, peer to peer over the internet. The world
of Free Software, Wikipedia, Khanacademy, MOOCs(Massive Open Online
Courses), Arxiv.org, to name a few would not have been possible had
people not been able to express, share, and spread their views over
internet. Internet has made it possible to decentralize knowledge and
make it accessible to people across the world.

On similar lines, Facebook, Gmail, Whatsapp, are just few examples of
how corporates have made use of internet and made available platforms to
enable people to communicate easily with very little technical
knowledge. They have come up with own business models across this also.

But though all these are the major and well known players in the
internet world, they just form a very small part of the actual internet
world. Internet comprises of millions of websites, each trying to
communicate some idea to its viewers. Like Facebook provides a platform
to communicate with your friends, a blogger like Avijit Roy may use his
blog as a platform to spread his views on religion. Like Gmail provides
mailing service, Riseup.net may provide mailing list services to
activists organizations. Whatsapp may provide services for people to
chat using their mobile, where as TOR may be used by people to browse
internet anonymously.

All of these wide range of
entities(individuals/organizations/corporates) are making use of
internet in their own way. Calling only a few of them OTT(Over The Top)
Service would definitely be wrong as each entity provides some or other
service. Some may make money over donations, some others by displaying
ads and some by selling ads. However that should not be a reason to
differentiate their content or service over the internet.

All of the content over internet should be treated equally irrespective
of how they are accessed, used or monetized. I would request government
of India not to take steps towards breaking fundamental aspects of
internet which is one of the humanity's greatest invention. Net
Neutrality is a must for future of Internet.

A criticism of Shourya’s climax

by viggy — Categories: discussion, experience, social — Tags: , , , , Leave a comment

On a first watch, Shourya seems to be a very good movie with a very good plot. One of the rare movies which is inspired from Hollywood(in this case, Few Good Men) and gets it right. The movie has very good dialogues, especially from Kay Kay Menon. He is also supported well by Rahul Bose in acting. All in all, on the first watch, it leaves you inspired about Indian army and the pride which is associated with it. It also gives you hope about Bollywood, finally a movie well done.
However it is only probably the second or the third time that I watched it fully that I could identify something very subtly hidden, something which is disturbing. May be it is my exaggeration or just a dire attempt to find something wrong in the movie.
Unlike Few Good Men, where right from the start the motive behind the act seemed very clear, here the motive behind the act only gets clear very much to the end of the movie. In Few Good Men, the story keeps building till the last scene. However in Shourya, the story for the most part is not as much associated with the case. This makes the last part, the climax, much more profound in the movie.
The complete case changes when the motive behind the Brigadier’s action is revealed all of a sudden in the movie. This motive is actually where the movie digresses from Few Good Men and this motive is actually something which is really subtly hidden disturbing thing according to me. In Few Good Men, the whole case is about how a junior goes against his superiors and hence hurts their pride and ego. However here the junior’s main crime is with his religion and the motive revolves around the same. Brigadier is shown to have extreme fundamentalism and that seems to be his motive behind why he treats his junior from the minority religion in such a way.

In Shourya, the movie is about Javed Khan being Muslim and how Brigadier Pratap’s extreme fundamentalist views makes him give free reign to his officers to conduct atrocities against Muslims in the region. Hence the motive of Brigadier’s action is fundamentalism rather than Pride and Honor which is the case in Few Good Men. If the movie had stopped at it, it would have been understandable. However what the script writer does is also try to explain the reason behind Brigadier’s fundamentalism. In less than two minutes, a story about Brigadier’s complete family being murdered by a servant, Jameel who was with the family since his childhood and to whom Brigadier was very cordial is revealed. Jameel being a Muslim, very subtly, Brigadier’s fundamentalism is justified in the movie. In that small story, script writer clearly portrays how Jameel even though being with the family since his childhood and knowing the family had the fundamentalistic mindset and hence was able to brutally murder the family. What is disturbing is that though the movie talks about a Muslim’s patriotism through Javed, through another Muslim, Jameel, it also talks about some heinous incidents caused by a Muslim. The script writer clearly could not comprehend that a Hindu’s fundamentalism cannot be just because his understanding of the other religion and people is wrong. He tries to ascertain that Hindu’s fundamentalism is only because there is a Muslim who does heinous incidents to their family. Else they are always very cordial with them.
Hence subtly the movie tries to portray two points. For every patriot Muslim, there is a equally fundamentalist Muslim in India. Also behind every fundamentalist Hindu, there is a fundamentalist Muslim’s actions behind it. It is very unfortunate that the script writer had to include the story of Jameel to justify the act of Brigadier. It is unfortunate that a movie depicting Muslim’s patriotism actually conveys something like this subtly.
Ofcourse may be this is just criticism for the sake of criticism and clearly even I couldnt recognize it when I watched it first time.
I think these subtle messages are something which script writer needs to be well aware of and its understanding is what differentiates between great and good movie.

Why I cannot only grief for the Delhi Rape Victim

by viggy — Categories: discussion, experience, social — Tags: , , Leave a comment

For last 2 weeks media has been talking about the Rape victim and our young people protesting on the road have ensured that the issue is kept alive. All of them are asking for stringent laws, some even talking of death penalty for the six accused. Amongst all this, unfortunately the rape victim who had suffered brutal injuries has passed away.

From what I hear in media, it seems the whole Indian youth seems to have connected to that girl and feel sorry for her. However though I do feel sorry for the victim, I am not sure why the whole country is suddenly talking about this case in particular. Rapes have been happening in all parts of the country with victims and also the accused from all strata of the society. We have several politicians who are themselves accused of raping. Army personnel and police have been regularly been blamed for torturing and raping women living in sensitive parts of the country.

I do not have the solution for stopping rapes in the country, I do not know if stringent laws will ensure that sex starved men will think twice before raping somebody or I do not know if the problem is not in the laws but in the society itself which keeps discriminating women right from the time of her birth.

However my concern is that how is it that the youth of India are able to connect to this victim and not to normal poor people that they see dieing due to hunger or lack of shelter or due to curable diseases. Isnt it also brutal. Isnt these cases that we see more often in our day to day life?

There are hundreds of people begging, many of them children below age of 10, how is it that the youth can take to streets for this particular rape case and not do anything for such children. Whose responsibility is to provide food and shelter to these kids? If government should provide security and ensure safety of people going to late night movies and parties, isnt it also responsible for the safety and well being of this poor kids. How is it that the Indian youth cannot see these people? Have we filtered our sensitivity only for people of middle class and above.

Do the youth really think that the beggars on the street who hardly have any shelter are safe from such rapists? Forget rapists, what about climate. When we sit cozily inside this chilling winter, how is it that we cannot think about the people living on the streets? Why not hold government accountable for not providing shelter for such people?

What we have seen in past is that youth of India come to streets only on matter that concerns to them? Remember protests against caste reservation? Remember protests against corruption? And now this. Have youth of India taken to streets for farmer suicides? What about the various issues that tribals have been fighting for decades now and which has lead to become what the Prime minister of India calls as “The single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by our country.”

Does it mean that even youth of India are selfish which awaken only on issues concerning them. Then how can they blame politicians who also are selfish and hence concerned about issues that concern them which primarily is doing whatever it takes to be in power.

It is important for youth of India to be wide awake and being sensitive to happenings to other people to whom they can relate to but I hope they will also come forward for reasons that concern the people who are voiceless and to whom media pays little attention.

To conclude, I am sorry for the rape victim, but I am more sorry for people dieing due to hunger or curable diseases or due to lack of shelter.

Urgent need to audit ngos in details

by viggy — Categories: discussion, experience, FSMK, social — Tags: , Leave a comment

I love the NGO working style bcoz they r people about the cause who fund it and there are people who feel for the cause and hence they work to achieve it. I am myself actively involved in 2 ngos, FSMK and VS memorial trust and devote considerable timw in both of them. But very often, i see that there are other friends who are involved with some other NGOs with whom i can or my NGOs can work together but there is always a fear in diluting our cause or not having enough data to trust the other NGO to believe that they are truely as motivated and dedicated as we are. This always stops me in getting involved or asking help for the ngos that i work with. Hence i think that there is a need for a platform where people who have solid integrity and a strong background do a thorough and regular audits on ngos and rank them. Infact there should be a social networking platform which gives you a chance to share information about the ngos and update about the impact they are making. NGOs are great organizational units that help people solve their own problems instead of always complaining about the inefficiency of the government to solv the problem. Hence we need to ensure that NGOs eco system doesnt get tainted as the current political party ecosystem. Hence we need the correctional and auditing units who can ensure that NGOs which are getting created just for selfish intentions of few people do not increase so much that common man looses all the trust he has on the NGO mode of operation. Hope there will be a NGO which will push for forming such units both dependant and independant of the governments.
